Social Media Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
