Britain and America have signed a significant trade agreement that will guarantee zero import taxes on UK medicine exports being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that import taxes on these vital products will be held at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This deal is in response to recent warnings to dramatically increase duties on branded pharmaceutical products, with potential rates discussed as high as one hundred percent.

"This deal between the UK strengthens the global environment for innovative medicines and introduces long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a statement noted.

Economic Importance

Drugs are one of the UK's biggest exports to the United States, which is easily the biggest destination for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data indicate that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped drugs totaling £11.1bn to the US. This amount accounted for nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that span.

"This agreement secures jobs, increases investment and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for medical research," a government official stated.

Detailed British Pledges

The deal involves several notable commitments from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it considers new treatments to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to increase total public funding on drugs from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The sum drug companies must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, rebates were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a ongoing row between the sector and the ministers over medicine costs and approval rates.

These tensions were intensified by arguments that American customers were charged significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major investments have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its resources over the past decade.
